The Concise Daily Practice of Guru Rinpoche: Exploration of the Tibetan Language

With Dr. Catherine Dalton

Open Dates

This set of recorded teachings is extremely beneficial for anyone wishing to learn the meaning of  “The Concise Daily Practice” of Guru Rinpoche, by studying the Tibetan words of the text. No previous knowledge of Tibetan is required to derive benefit from this class.

In this online workshop, Dr. Catherine Dalton will elucidate the profound meaning of the Tibetan text of the Manual for Concise Daily Practice (Gyünkyi Köljang), revealed by Chokgyur Dechen Lingpa as part of his Dispeller of All Obstacles (Tukdrup Barché Künsel) treasure cycle.

This simple, essential practice focuses upon Guru Padmasambhava, known affectionately as Guru Rinpoche, crowned by Avalokiteshvara, the embodiment of compassion, and Amitayus, Lord of Infinite Life. It is said in Guru Rinpoche’s own instructions that the most powerful way to dispel obstacles is to pray to the guru—the master who embodies all the awakened beings of past, present, and future—and he composed this easy-to-follow practice so that we too can call upon the guru, and come to embody his boundless love, wisdom, and compassionate activity.

This workshop took place auspiciously in the days leading up to, and ended with a tsok practice on, Guru Rinpoche’s birthday—the 10th day of the 6th month of the Tibetan lunar calendar—celebrating his miraculous birth from the heart of a blossoming lotus, amidst the milky-white waters of Dhanakosha in the northwestern land of Uddiyana. It was on this occasion that the dakinis implored him to come to this world and continue the activities of Shakyamuni Buddha, and in particular to teach the Secret Mantra Vajrayana to destined disciples, by intoning these vajra words:

Hung! On the northwest border of the land of Uddiyana,

on the anthers of a lotus flower,

you attained the marvelous supreme siddhi,

renowned as the Lotus Born,

surrounded by a retinue of many dakinis.

please come and bestow your blessings!

Guru Pema Siddhi Hung

Join us as we explore the revealed words of the Manual for Concise Daily Practice, the most essential of sadhanas in our tradition for invoking the blessings of all the buddhas of the three times, embodied in the glorious Lotus-Born Guru, Padmasambhava. This workshop will serve as an essential compliment to Lama Tsultrim Sangpo’s July 27—August 5 teaching series Becoming Diving: Four Stakes that Bind the Life-Force, which will provide guidance on how to actually put the sadhana into practice and to train authentically in the development stage.

Workshop Structure

Dr. Catherine Dalton led this workshop via Zoom on July 17–19, 2021. Registrants will gain access to the recordings of all sessions, which integrate teaching, practice, and Q&A. There are four sessions, each approximately 2 hours in length.
