Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche

Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche is a world-renowned teacher and meditation master in the Kagyu and Nyingma traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. He was born in Tibet in 1951 as the oldest son of his mother Kunsang Dechen, a devoted Buddhist practitioner, and his father Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, an accomplished master of Buddhist meditation. As a young child, Chokyi Nyima—“Sun of the Dharma”—was recognized as the 7th incarnation of the Tibetan meditation master Gar Drubchen.

In 1959, following the Chinese occupation of Tibet, Rinpoche’s family fled to India where Rinpoche spent his youth studying under some of Tibetan Buddhism’s most illustrious masters, such as His Holiness the 16th Gyalwang Karmapa, Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche, Khunu Lama Tenzin Gyaltsen, and his father, Kyabje Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche.

In 1974, Rinpoche left India to join his parents in Kathmandu, Nepal, where he assisted them in establishing Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery. Upon its completion in 1976, H.H. the Karmapa enthroned Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche as the monastery’s abbot. To this day, Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling remains the heart of Rinpoche’s ever-growing mandala of activity.

In addition to establishing over a dozen Gomde retreat centers and Dharma House city centers globally, Rinpoche also founded and developed and international university—Rangjung Yeshe Institute for Buddhist Studies—in Kathmandu, Nepal. Rinpoche is also the founder of Rangjung Yeshe Publications, which has translated and produced more than 40 Buddhist titles, including his own books, such as Union of Mahamudra and Dzogchen, Song of Karmapa, Bardo Guidebook, Indisputable TruthPresent Fresh Wakefulness, and Sadness, Love, Openness: The Buddhist Path of Joy.

Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche is the teacher and guide of Gomde California.

The Ocean of Amrita Puja 2024
August 4, 2024

About the Ocean of Amrita Puja (Ngakso) Ngakso (Tib.) means mending (faults) by means of mantra. This tantric sadhana is a terma (Tib.), or hidden treasure, concealed in Tibet by Guru Rinpoche, and rediscovered centuries later by the incarnated great treasure-revealer, Terchen Chokgyur Dechen Lingpa. Extracted from among the 40 volumes of the Chokling Tersar, the melodious and enchanting sadhana practice is especially effective for restoring broken samaya (spiritual pledges), strengthening the bond between student and spiritual teacher, and dispelling obstacles in the bardo state for those who have recently passed away.
